The Friends of the Buffalo State Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum was instituted in fall of 2016 to help bring our once beautiful campus landscape back to its former glory. The Friends of the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum are sustained by donations and volunteers to help in any way that supports the mission of the Arboretum. The Friends of the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum seek to restore much of what was lost in the October storm of 2006, emerald ash borer infestation and construction loss and have sponsored several tree planting days or “Big Digs” using donated funds and volunteers to plant trees across campus. They have also sponsored making our tree database publicly available on the arboretum website and other educational opportunities. Come be part of this great organization.

Big Dig Projects
With guidance from the Campus Planning Office, the Friends of the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum has organized 5 volunteer tree planting events called Big Digs since 2019. The inaugural event, the Big Dig I took place in the spring of 2019 and now these planting days are held in the fall. The latest planting, The Big Dig V was held on November 4, 2023 when the volunteers planted 27 new trees. On Arbor Day 2024, the upcoming Big Dig VI for the fall of 2024 will be announced.
